One Roof Celebrates 400th Community Land Trust Home

One Roof recently reached a major milestone through the development of its 400th Community Land Trust (CLT) home. While the number itself is significant, it actually reflects more than 650 families who have accessed affordable homeownership through the program over the years, building stability, equity, and stronger connections to their communities.

For Katie, the buyer of One Roof’s 400th CLT home, the journey began with skepticism. After months of searching unsuccessfully for a nice home she could afford, she came across an online listing that seemed almost too good to be true.

“I thought it was a mistake,” she said.

Instead, the home was part of One Roof’s CLT program, a model designed to create lasting affordable homeownership opportunities. As she learned more about the program, what initially felt impossible started to feel within reach. For Katie, finding a home was never just about the property itself. She wanted a stable place for her children, somewhere they could have space of their own while remaining connected to their schools, friends, and community. “My main focus was finding a home that provided consistency for my kids,” she said. “This house filled all of those needs. It’s a dream come true.”

Throughout the homebuying process, One Roof staff helped guide her through each step, answering questions, providing support, and helping her navigate what can often feel like an overwhelming experience. Today, Katie and her family are settling into a quiet neighborhood close to schools, parks, and everyday amenities. Looking back, the moment that stands out most to Katie is getting the email letting her know she had been selected for the home.

“The relief and gratitude I felt was overwhelming,” she said. “I realized how much stress and worry I had been carrying for months, if not years, wondering if I would be able to find a home I could afford.”

While Katie’s story is uniquely her own, it reflects experiences shared by hundreds of CLT homeowners. Behind each of the 400 homes is a family with its own goals, challenges, and hopes for the future. Some were first-time homebuyers searching for an affordable path into the market. Others were looking for stability after years of uncertainty. Together, they represent more than 650 families who have gained the opportunity to put down roots and invest in their futures through the Community Land Trust.

To Katie, the milestone demonstrates what is possible when communities commit to finding creative solutions to housing challenges. “Four hundred homes shows what can be accomplished when people work together to find creative solutions,” she said. “Affordable housing is a major concern in Duluth, and One Roof has found sustainable ways to make homeownership a reality for an ever-growing group of people.”

As One Roof celebrates its 400th CLT home, the organization remains focused on creating additional opportunities for future homeowners. The milestone is not simply about the number of homes sold. It is about families like Katie’s finding the safety, stability, and peace of mind that come with having a place to call their own.

“It means safety, security, and stability for my kids,” Katie said. “There’s not really much more you can ask for.”
